Eleven Months before the Solarid Meteor Shower…

“Mr Tempa? We need you to come down to the station to answer a few questions.”

I swallowed thickly as those words sank in, clutching my Atlas to my ear and tossing up a silencing bubble before I replied. I was walking through the Acrux Courtyard with the Lunar Brotherhood dominating the bleachers on my right and the Oscura Clan spilling all over the picnic benches to my left; I sure as shit didn’t want either of them to know I was on the phone to the FIB.

“Erm, can I ask what this is about…Officer?” I asked, my voice not coming out anywhere near as strong as I’d have liked it to.

“We are conducting an investigation into a professor at your Academy molesting one of the students there.”

“Oh?” I asked as casually as I could manage.

“Don’t play dumb with us lad, we know you’re the one who made the recording we’re using as our main source of evidence and we need your witness statement to add to the prosecution,” the agent’s voice was firm and unyielding as he spoke down to me like I was an idiot.

“I don’t know anything about a recording,” I tried as my heart thundered with panic.

I couldn’t have my name linked to this case. If Ryder found out that I was the one who had filmed him then he’d kill me. Chop me up, grind me down, use me to fertilise some kind of psycho garden that he grew with his earth magic and let the worms shit out anything that was left over. Nope. I didn’t want that future.

“Would you prefer me to send a team down there with a warrant for your arrest?”

“How can you arrest me? I haven’t done anything!” I growled, finding my balls somewhere because I wasn’t going to let them fuck this up for me. I needed both gang Kings on side and I needed to live. Not for me. But for Ella. She was counting on me to rise her up out of this life and to protect her from Old Sal even if she didn’t realise it. I wouldn’t let her down. Not for anything. Certainly not for some asshole FIB agent with an axe to grind and nothing better to do than ruin my fucking life over that goddamn recording.

“Like I said, we know you were there, we tracked the recording back to its original source. Dante Oscura may be the one who uploaded it online, but it only took us a moment to check the records on his Atlas interactions to find out that you were the one who sent it to him. We have a tap on his communications anyway. And once we checked your Atlas, it was clear that no one had sent it to you. Which means you’re the one with the original copy. It will be no work for me to prove that if you want to go down the warrant route?”

“No!” I exclaimed, glancing around and damn near pissing myself as I found Ryder looking straight at me.
